Drainage Grading

Grading is the act of leveling a surface, or creating a subtle slope, for drainage to occur on a landscape or garden. Proper lawn grading is essential for solving any residential or commercial drainage issues.

If the yard isn’t properly sloped away from the foundation, moisture will roll down the hill whenever it rains, or when there is melting snow on the property. This causes moisture to build up next to your foundation walls.

Eventually, water always finds the path of least resistance and it will make its way into cracks and crevices in your exterior walls. When this happens, you don’t just have a drainage problem outside the home to worry about, but also a wet basement or crawl space. This can ultimately lead to deterioration of the structural integrity of your home, and to dangerous mold growth.

Types Of Available Lawn Grading

Grassy Swale

This is an area of the lawn which is carefully and cautiously graded to help with directing water flow. It could be as little as a 1 inch drop every 10 feet. This helps to remove water from large, low-lying areas of the ground. The water is directed into a big area or into a drain.

Bog Area

There are certain types of plants that can be used in a “bog” area to act as a drainage solution to excess water. This includes dogwood, willows, and other plants found in the North Metro Atlanta area.

French Drain

This is the most common solution to the problem. They consist of a perforated pipe that is surrounded by gravel to help keep it in place. The drain directs water out to an exterior system instead of keeping it within the landscaped area of the property.

Dry Well

There are an environmentally-friendly alternative to French drains because they discharge water on-site. Downspouts and drains are directed to special underground storage areas. The moisture gradually filters out of the “well” areas and eventually gets into the groundwater tables.

Corrugated Plastic Tubes

This is an affordable solution and can be used for directing water away from downspouts. It sits over the end of a downspout and is able to be buried under the ground to move water to a separate landscaping area or to another drainage system.
